History

February 2006 Agreement in Principle
Representatives of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Scripps Research Institute, and UC San Diego reach agreement in principle to create a shared resource for addressing research ethics, including stem cell ethics.

March 2006 San Diego Institute for Regenerative Medicine
Announcement of the creation of the San Diego Institute for Regenerative Medicine to include the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Scripps Research Institute, and UC San Diego in stem cell research.

July 2006 San Diego Research Ethics Consortium
Announcement of the creation of the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium (SDREC).

April 2007 Ethics Training Requirement
All members of the SDREC begin developing or adopting requirements for ethics training; UCSD and The Scripps Research Institute adopt requirements for initial training in ethics and continuing ethics education for stem cell researchers

October 2007 Modified Ethics Training Requirement
UC San Diego and The Scripps Research Institute adopt a modified ethics training requirement to recognize the need to match levels of training requirements to the nature of the research being conducted.

December 2007 Adoption of a Common Ethics Training Requirement
Burnham Institute for Biomedical Research and Salk Institute for Biological Studies confirm adoption of the requirement for ethics training. This decision confirmed that all four institutions accepted a common approach to requirements for ethics training.

October 2008 La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology joins the SDREC
La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology (LIAI) joined the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium effective July 2008.

October 2010 International Stem Cell Corporation joins the SDREC
International Stem Cell Corporation (ISCO) joined the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium effective July 2010.

August 2011 Five Year Review of SDREC
Representatives of SDREC institutions were interviewed to assess strengths and challenges for the SDREC to continue providing useful services. A summary of the report can be downloaded here:
